H. Holistic Development

Support & Personal Development for Social Activists

The term  "Integral" means that we give equal importance to the internal as well as external dimensions, as they are totally inter-connected & indivisible in reality, although our fragmentation culture has led us to assume otherwise.

The  "ExpandAMOs" Course"

Yearly course in four parts, starting 21 December, 21 March, 21 June & 21 September

ExpandAMOs evolved from our own integral permaculture students during 2011 & now consists of 4 courses (one in each season) which can be taken in a modular way or all together, over a full year, the main purpose being to form a very special "Mastermind" group to support us as social activists & permaculture designers.

The EcoListening Courses

2 full Fundamentals courses per year, starting March & September

Link directs to spanish page, which is currently being translated to English

An Introduction to EcoListening forms part of the ExpandAMOs programme, but it can also be taken in an independent way as an introductory course, & also a more advanced option.

We offer the same complete fundamentals course of the Re-Evaluation Co-Counselling network, in an environment adapted for social activists.

You can see more detail in the website of the EcoListening network which is being developed: EcoListening.IntegralPermaculture.org

* The general principle of holism was summarized concisely by Aristotle in his writings on metaphysics, that is what goes beyond physics (books that he wrote precisely after those on physics): "The whole is more than the sum of its parts".

This concept can be defined as the treatment of a subject or a problem in a way that considers all of its components through the five senses, including its invisible but equally evident or existing relationships.
And this approximation is used as a third way or a new focus for a particular problem or question.

Weapons of Mass Distraction

This video (not made by us) describes quite well why we emphasize the importance of doing both the internal & external work at the same time, & describes what is happening today with relation to the dangers of fragmentation.

This is happening with both -

1) the 'environmental & social movements' which don't usually acknowledge the importance of the internal dimension of change, arguing that people change according to the society that conditions us (therefore we just have to try to change that society, & the rest will automatically follow) .... &

2) the 'personal development industry', in particular most parts of "the New Age" movement, which promote the agenda that most problems are (basically) "just in our heads", & external change, if any is indeed desirable, will automatically follow some internal re-structuring of our consciousness.

Both of these approaches (by & of themselves, especially when dealt with separately) in practice tend to become another part of the big arsenal of 'weapons of mass distraction' which are holding back real change, by promoting a great deal of confusion and cognitive dissonance as modern people try to reconcile many very conflicting models of reality.

This is what is very special about the Integral Permaculture curriculum: as systemic thinking cannot happen by working in a fragmented way, it includes more than people normally expect in terms of personal development, or internal design of people, as well as that of groups & entire societies.

Holistic Development* refers to the fact that we encourage (we supply the tools, support & structures) so that people can get support to develop at all levels at the same time.

So these courses are
for people who -

a) want to deepen in this aspect, from a permacultural perspective,

b)  who are in a process of personal transition,

c)  or who are in leadership positions,

d)  are supporting other people,

e)  are working in groups

f)  or for whatever reason wish to expand their personal support base,

we offer the Mastermind Group ExpandAMOs & the EcoListening Network & courses

The two complete courses are included in Option F, of the Integral Permaculture Diploma, but they can also be taken separately, before or during the other courses.

All social activism & permaculture projects involve groups of people so how to design groups, relationships, collective intelligence, how to negotiate differences & conflict ... all of these are crucial components of any design that is going to be truly sustainable.

We are taught how to make maps of physical landscapes but not usually about how to make maps of internal landscapes.

Yet this knowledge has been around for some time & a lot of it is very sound & useful, although much that is well-publicized nowadays is mostly designed to help us stay distracted, rather than find our own deep values & centre, so we can better navigate through life especially in times of turmoil.
