a very inspiring report about how a simple tool like a LETS scheme (Local Exchange & Trading System: local money backed by local goods & services) can improve the quality of life of a community during an economic crisis

"There are now more than 325 time banks and alternative currency systems in Spain involving tens of thousands of citizens.
Collectively, these projects represent one of the largest experiments in social money in modern times."
It is possible that this interesting complementary currencies panorama in Spain might have something to do with our efforts in teaching about money design, in the NodoEspiral permacultura courses.
This started with a pioneering EcoEconomics* module of the Permaculture Design Certificate course we launched with this new Academy node, in 2003.
*(This has now progressed even more, and is currently being developed in our E-book, as the new EcoEconomy chapter, http://bit.ly/EcoEconomy, in preparation for the full course in Economy & Transition coming up soon)
Later, in 2005 we launched the 1st Complementary Currencies conference in Spain together with a group of partner organizations, in an article where we explain why it's so important to design new money systems & how the conference came about:
"During a recent discussion about Peak Oil with permaculture colleagues in Spain, we asked ourselves in which edge it would be most important to work in order to minimize the destructive impact of the worst predictions.
Our conclusion was that we have to create local economies which are more solid & strong (resilient); that the safest & quickest way to achieve this is through the creation of local complementary currencies; & that therefore the most urgent & important thing would be to expand the training about these in Spain."
One of the results of this conference was the creation of a wiki of complementary currencies, where you can see this first conference documented, and also the 4 that followed: this recent one we helped to add a virtual edge to was the 5th Money conference in Spain.
